Big Books, Small Books, Soft Books, Hard Books, Flat Books, Shiny Books, Matt Books, Board Books, Bath Books, Pop-up Books... Shoe Books?!

Here at Albury Children's Books, we do lots of interesting things with books to enhance them beyond just the words and illustrations...

The first thing that many people think of when publishing a children's book, is whether they would like their book to be hardback or paperback. But beyond this, what is there? The waters can become a bit murky, and the endless options available to authors and illustrators are often, sadly, not fully explored.

In order to make sure that both our authors and those thinking of publishing with us can discover the huge capabilities that we have on offer here, we have put together a few examples of some of the more exciting book production options that we are able to fulfil. Enjoy!

Board Books

Board books come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, plus their design is easily customisable so our authors can incorporate unique elements, just like the picture on the left. These board books have handles incorporated into the binding so that they are easy to carry around, or attach to a buggy.
In the picture on the right, each board book within the collection features a different story topic. The books fit snugly into a sturdy presentation box, making them both easy to transport and a great gift item for young children.
Sometimes though, no matter how hard you try, small children will try their very best to tear their much loved books limb from limb, leaving you with a pile of torn pages... Not so with this spiral binding option. With a spiral bind, the pages of a board book are held firmly together by the plastic spiral, meaning that little ones can try their very best to pull, tug and throw them down the stairs, but the pages will remain intact, firmly threaded onto the spiral. Genius!

Waterproof Books

Bathtime - an essential, but wet and stormy end to each day! With waterproof books like those shown in the pictures, you can distract the little Poseidons from trying to flood the bathroom with a good story...

Pop-Up Books

Pop-up books are great fun for all ages. The surprising joy that each pop-up page brings to readers, both old and young, is something that can be used as a great tool to enhance understanding and encourage the enjoyment of reading.

We all had our own favourite pop-up books as a child, and now with advancements in technology and digital printing, we are able to create increasingly detailed and intricate pop-up designs, as seen in the picture on the top right. On the top left, the pop-up fruit you can see is an example of pop-up books being used to encourage interaction with a book's narrative. Finally, you will see a wonderful example of a pop-up that can be detached from the book and hung up, keeping a physical reminder of the story, even when your book is safely back on the shelf.

Unusual Books

The imaginations of authors, illustrators and creatives are often filled to the brim with brilliant ideas that stretch beyond the boundaries of a printed page... If you are one of these people, we would love to help you create the book of your wildest, most inventive dreams. Take a look at some of the examples below to get a flavour of the lengths we can and will go to for our Albury Books authors and illustrators...

A book with an accompanying puzzle... Not so puzzling to create though!
A book with 3D fabric elements.... Nobody is going to be pulling funny faces like these if you want to create children's books like this!
A book with an accompanying toy - a great idea for authors who plan to have merchandising created to develop a brand for their books...
Books in unusual shapes -  these are fun, and brilliant for festive occasions like Halloween, Christmas and Birthdays. You could even have a one-off, personalised book made in the shape of a gift for your child's birthday...

The options are virtually endless. Whatever you want, we can create.

So, now you can see for yourself that we are able to make some truly amazing books here at Albury Books, but we would like to finish off by showing you that we can also make normal books too! Big books, small books, harback books, paperback books, shiny books, matt books and everything inbetween books...

(Yes, we know that the monkey one has an amazing cover... not quite a 'normal' book, but then again, who wants normal when you can have extraordinary?)

Welcome to the Albury Children's Books Blog

Hello and welcome to the first Albury Books blog post!

By way of introduction to us and our blog, we would like to begin by explaining a bit about who we are and what we do...

Albury Books is an international children's publishing house with a difference. The thing that sets us apart from other publishers, is our dedication to the idea that each of our authors and illustrators should be able to publish the children's book that they want - not the children's book that we imagined for them. Our collaborative publishing approach is uniquely designed to reflect the needs of each individual title, each individual author, and each individual illustrator.

Many people always dream of publishing their own children's book, whether it's for public sale or for private use. We can make all sorts of books, from the standard hardbacks and paperbacks, to board books and bath books and pop-up books and interactive books and sticker books and, and, and, well... anything you could possibly think of! The sky really is the limit with Albury Children's Books.

Publishing your book with Albury is also an enjoyable, exciting and enchanting experience. This is something that you can discover for yourself first hand by publishing with us, or by reading about our inspirational author stories, to be featured in some of our upcoming blog entries.

Recently we launched our beautiful new Albury Children's Books website, www.alburybooks.com. It's a really fun design and we hope that our authors and illustrators, old and new, will love it too!

We have included lots of really useful information on our website for authors and illustrators looking to publish a children's book, because we understand that the publication process can sometimes seem a little daunting... Featured in the Key Advantages section of our site, you will find information about how Albury Books can help you with copyediting, illustration, design, layout, printing, ISBN allocation and all the services above and in between that you will need to publish your book.

But what are these things, really? It's all very well for a publisher to tell you that you need these things, but it's also nice to understand exactly what they are...

So, to try and clear up a few of the questions you might be asking yourself, here's the Albury Books publishing jargon buster:

ISBNs

What is an ISBN? Do I need an ISBN? How do I get an ISBN? Can Albury Books provide me with an ISBN?

An ISBN, otherwise known as an International Standard Book Number, is a unique, 13-digit number, which is used to identify each individual book. You will need an ISBN if you wish to sell your book to the public, either through bookshops or through online retailers. There are some circumstances when one isn't needed, such as if the book is for private use, but one can always be added later if you change your mind.
You will get an ISBN from us at Albury Books when you publish with us, simple as that!

Copyediting / Proofreading / Editing

What is copyediting? What is proofreading? What is editing? How can I have my work edited, copyedited or proofread?

Copyediting is the work that an editor does to improve the formatting, style and accuracy of the text, but not the content. Proofreading is similar, but it places more of a focus on finding typos and ensuring that the text is completely ready for print. Editing is more focused on the structure of the text and makes sure that the text is accurate and consistent throughout. You can have your text edited, copyedited or proofread by one of our brilliant editors, and in collaboration with you, we will asses the level of attention that your individual text needs.

Illustration

What is an illustrator? How can I find an illustrator for my children's book?

An illustrator is a narrative artist who creates pictures for a children's book to provide a visual representation of the story. Albury Books can help you find the right illustrator for your story, and your budget. We know lots of brilliant, award winning illustrators, along with some exciting, up-and-coming illustrators, so we are sure to be able to find the right person to suit your book.

Design and Layout

What is design and layout? Why do I need design and layout work done to my book? How can I find someone to do the design and layout for my book?

Design and layout are terms used to describe how your text and images will look when they are in the printed book. Each book needs to be designed and laid out so that the pages look professional, the printers can print it correctly, and most importantly, the book can be read! We can help out with the design and layout of your book, and we will work with you to make sure that each page looks just the way you want it to.

Printing

How can I find someone to print my book? Where can I print my book? What printing options are available?

We will print your book for you! You can easily print your book directly through Albury Books, and we have lots and lots of different options available! Because each project is different and there are so many different printing options, it's best to contact us about this directly so we can give you the right information, specific to your book.
Among the more popular options we offer are short-run printing and POD, or Print on Demand. POD lets you print as many copies as you want, when you want, as often as you want; whereas short-run printing will print a larger number of books all at once for you to sell immediately. Both of these are brilliant options for people who are collaboratively publishing with us at Albury Children's Books.

That's about all for now, we will be updating the blog again soon with some information about our current authors and how they we getting on with the publication of their books!
